Does Stripe allow peptides? What Stripe's own rules say

Stripe does not ban peptides by name. Its help centre says it supports the sale of many peptides, with limits. Most peptide shutdowns trace back to one of those limits. Here is Stripe's published text, what it means for a peptide store, and what to do if your account has already been closed.

Peptides on Stripe's restricted businesses list

Stripe publishes a list of prohibited businesses and a list of restricted businesses. For prohibited businesses, Stripe says "You must not use Stripe's services". Restricted businesses "require additional due diligence by Stripe in order to confirm our ability to support them."

The version last updated on 22 September 2026 does not mention peptides by name. Three entries matter for a peptide store:

  • Prohibited: "Incorrectly labeled research chemicals". It sits under illegal weapons, explosives and dangerous materials.
  • Prohibited: "Pseudo-pharmaceuticals or nutraceuticals that are not safe or make harmful claims".
  • Restricted: "Card-not-present prescription-only products and pharmaceuticals", under pharmaceuticals, medical devices and telemedicine.

Stripe also says that when it does approve a restricted business, the approval "may be modified or revoked by Stripe at any time per the terms of the Stripe Services Agreement."

What Stripe's FAQ says about selling peptides

Stripe's FAQ on the list answers the question "My business is not a pharmacy. May I sell peptides?" It begins: "Yes, Stripe supports the sale of many different peptides, with some limitations." The limits fall into three groups:

  • Prescription-only peptides. "A large number of peptides are prescription only and are required to be sold by pharmacies, meaning Stripe must preapprove the merchant."
  • Peptides for human or animal use that need no prescription. Stripe allows these without prior approval "as long as they do not make false or misleading claims, are properly branded, and are safe for their intended use."
  • Research peptides. Stripe allows these "as long as there are preventive measures in place to ensure these are not accessible to those who would purchase research chemicals for nonresearch purposes."

Then comes the sentence that catches most research stores: "We will assume that peptides sold where no purpose is specified are sold for human consumption."

What this means for a peptide store

This is our reading of Stripe's text. Stripe makes its own decision on each account.

  • No stated purpose means human use. If a product page sells a peptide without saying what it is for, Stripe treats it as sold for human consumption. The conditions on claims, branding and safety then apply, or the prescription rules do.
  • Effect claims count twice. Copy about what a peptide does to the body is a claim Stripe can judge as false, misleading or harmful. It also tells a reviewer the product is meant for people.
  • Prescription-only peptides need preapproval. Selling them through a standard signup, without being a pharmacy that Stripe has approved, puts the account outside Stripe's terms.
  • Research stores need preventive measures. Stripe does not list the measures it expects. A research-use line in the footer may not be enough, so ask Stripe in writing what it needs for your store.

If Stripe has already closed your account

  1. Save your records now

Download the closure notice, monthly statements, payout history and dispute log while you can still reach the Dashboard. A bank reviewing a new application will usually ask for recent processing statements and the closure notice.

  2. Find out what is happening to your balance

Stripe's Services Agreement defines a reserve as "collateral funds which Stripe holds and controls to satisfy any liabilities or potential liabilities" under the agreement. Look for the amount held and the release date in your notice or Dashboard, and ask Stripe in writing if either is missing. Keep refunding customers who ask, so disputes do not build up against the held funds.

  3. Do not open a second Stripe account

The Services Agreement says a user must not "attempt to create a Stripe Account on behalf of or for the benefit of a user whose use of the Stripe services was suspended or terminated by Stripe, unless Stripe approves otherwise."

  4. Fix the store against Stripe's conditions

State the purpose on every product page. Remove claims about effects on the body. Do not sell prescription-only peptides through a standard account. Keep the store online while you work, because underwriters review the live site. The underwriting checklist and the guide to peptide merchant account requirements cover the details.

  5. Apply for an account underwritten for peptides

A dedicated merchant account is issued in your business name by an acquiring bank that has agreed to review the category. Before it signs any merchant, the bank must check Mastercard's MATCH database of terminated merchants. Tell us the reason for the Stripe closure at the start, so the file explains it before the bank asks.

Questions peptide merchants ask about Stripe

Does Stripe allow peptides?

Stripe's FAQ says it "supports the sale of many different peptides, with some limitations." Prescription-only peptides need Stripe's preapproval. Research peptides need preventive measures against buyers who want them for non-research purposes. Peptides sold with no stated purpose are treated as sold for human consumption.

Are peptides on Stripe's prohibited list?

Not by name. The list last updated on 22 September 2026 prohibits "Incorrectly labeled research chemicals" and "Pseudo-pharmaceuticals or nutraceuticals that are not safe or make harmful claims". It lists card-not-present prescription-only products and pharmaceuticals as restricted.

Can I open a new Stripe account under another name?

No. Stripe's Services Agreement bars creating an account for the benefit of a user whose use of Stripe was suspended or terminated, unless Stripe approves. Apply for an account that is underwritten for peptides instead.

Will the Stripe closure stop a bank from considering me?

Not by itself. Underwriters look at why the account was closed, your dispute history and what your site looks like today. Banks must check Mastercard's MATCH database before signing a merchant, and a MATCH record stays on the system for five years, so the reason for any past termination matters. The acquiring bank makes the approval decision.

How long does a peptide merchant account take?

Underwriting typically takes two to five business days once your documents are in. Timing depends on the bank and on how complete your file is.

What will the account cost?

High-risk pricing is set per merchant, so we do not publish a single number. You get a written quote after underwriting, with any rolling-reserve percentage and release schedule spelled out, before you sign anything.
